Using a Specialty Window as a Kitchen Backsplash

A kitchen sink that happens to be situated in front of an exterior wall presents a great opportunity to install a custom window as a backsplash. In today’s post, replacement door and window company Renewal by Andersen® of Austin shares a look at the benefits of installing a specialty window for your backsplash.

Benefits of a Window Backsplash

Having a specialty window as a backsplash offers the following benefits:

Natural Lighting — A window backsplash provides abundant natural lighting to the kitchen sink, as well as to adjacent work areas. Natural lighting helps reduce use of electrical lighting during the day and makes the kitchen look spacious.

View of the Outdoors — A window backsplash gives you a pleasing view of the outdoors to enjoy while cleaning the dishes. You can even keep an eye on your kids while they play outside when you’re doing the dishes. The same benefit is provided by sliding patio doors.

Easy to Clean — Windows are much easier to clean than tile or stone; they don’t have grout lines, nor do they need rebuffing. Renewal by Andersen windows feature metal oxide coatings on our High Performance™ Low-E4® glass. When activated by sunlight, it helps remove up to 99% of water stains on the glass surface.

Window Backsplash Considerations

Before you decide to install a window backsplash there are a few factors to consider:

Location — You may have to have an opening created for backsplash windows, if your kitchen doesn’t have one, which will go on top of the window replacement costs. Alternatively, the kitchen sink can be placed in front of an existing window; however, this might require some plumbing work.

Window Style — Custom specialty windows are built to specification, which gives you the option to choose virtually any style. A fixed window (as opposed to operable windows) provides the most airtight seal, gives you the best view and allows the most natural light.

Orientation — Windows facing east-to-west will let direct sunlight into your kitchen. Some people find direct sunlight too harsh. If you want softer and more consistent daytime lighting, a backsplash window on a north-facing wall is better.
