4 Window Maintenance Habits You Should Avoid

Proper use of windows is just as important as observing window care and maintenance. Part of a homeowner’s responsibility is knowing what to do—and what not to do—when caring for their windows.

In today’s post, replacement windows and sliding patio doors company Renewal by Andersen® of Austin shares the common window maintenance habits that you should avoid.

1. Leaving Window Treatments Closed — Window treatments are meant to control privacy and natural lighting, but you shouldn’t cover your windows all the time. Some do this because they work at night and need to sleep during the day, while others do so because of privacy concerned. Keeping window treatments shut defeats the purpose of having windows in the first place. It can also lead to problems such as trapping moisture and odors in the room, as well as blocking ventilation. Certain types of window treatments may also block egress windows, which can pose a hazard in case of emergencies.

2. Improper Cleaning Procedures — Some people mistake “low maintenance” with “no maintenance,” resulting in neglect. Low maintenance doors and windows still need to be cleaned every once in a while. Check your window maintenance guide to make sure you’re following proper cleaning procedures, as different window types have different maintenance requirements. Some window frames require scraping and repainting, while those with factory-applied coatings, like the ones manufactured by Renewal by Andersen®, do not.

3. Using a Pressure Washer — Pressure washers are an effective cleaning tool for some parts of the house, such as concrete driveways. However, they are not recommended for use on windows: you’re more likely to damage window finishes and seals, or even shatter the glass panels, than effectively clean them.

4. Not Cleaning the Sliding Window Tracks — Sliding windows can sometimes get stuck in their frames because of trapped dirt and debris in the tracks. Never try to force the windows open or closed, as this can cause damage to the window tracks. This can be prevented by making sure the window tracks are clean. Our sliding windows feature removable sashes that makes cleaning a lot easier.
