The prototype being developed by Berkeley Lab with Andersen Windows has three components. First, a layer of thin glass is inserted between the two layers of the double-glazed window. Then a second low-emissivity coating is applied and, finally, argon gas is replaced with krypton gas, which is much more insulating in the narrow space between the panes.
The developers are finding a way to make the window glass the same width and virtually the same weight as existing double-glazed windows. This avoids having to redesign the window sash and frame, which would pose a significant cost obstacle to market penetration. This means that your usual casement or sliding windows will still look and feel the same, but with punched up features like double insulation.
