Rattling windows can be annoying, especially during windy nights when you’re trying to sleep. Fortunately, there are some things that can be done to fix it. In today’s post, patio doors and replacement windows company Renewal by Andersen® of Austin shares a look at the causes of rattling windows, and how they can be fixed.
Causes of Rattling Windows
Rattling windows are caused by one or more of the following:
Loose Window Glass — Window glass usually comes loose on traditional single pane windows, especially if the glass panels are set in the sashes using putty. As the putty shrinks, the glass comes loose enough to rattle when hit by wind.
Loose Sashes — Sashes are supposed to sit flush with the frame. It may come loose due to old or damaged window hardware, or if the sash and/or frame becomes warped with age. Warping is less likely when the window frames are made of composites like Fibrex® material. This is an important consideration when choosing replacement sliding patio doors and windows, as the frames can also get stuck at certain points.
Worn-Out Weatherstripping — Weatherstripping is made of strips of rubber or metal that prevent air leaks in the gaps between frame and sash. It also helps the sashes sit flush on the frame. Gaps may form as the weatherstripping gets worn out, which can later result in rattling.
How to Fix Rattling Windows
There are a few quick fixes that can help reduce rattling. Loose glass panels can be set back into the sashes using caulk, hardware can be adjusted, and weatherstripping can be replaced. However, it is important to note that these are short-term fixes. Structural issues like warping can only be addressed with window replacement. If the frames are in good condition, you can choose to have just the sashes replaced: a method called insert window replacement.
Whatever replacement method you choose, a custom replacement window company like Renewal by Andersen® can help you design replacement windows with the right design, made with warp-resistant materials and reliable hardware, and with years of rattle-free operation.
