Glazing needs to be a top consideration when you’re looking for a new replacement door or window. It comes in single, double or triple-pane varieties. In this post, Renewal by Andersen® of Austin shares a look at whether or not the extra panes automatically result in higher energy efficiency.
Back in the day, single-pane glass was the only option for window glazing. Single-pane glass remains in use to this day, particularly in countries where there is little variation in climate throughout the year. As a naturally conductive material, glass offers little resistance to heat conduction in windows with just one pane. During summer, heat can easily pass through regardless of how airtight the windows are. In areas that experience extreme temperatures, a home with single-pane glass windows would have high indoor heating and cooling requirements that result in high energy bills.
Double-pane glass is nowadays a standard component of energy-efficient windows and entry doors. It is made of two glass panes separated by an insulated spacer. The lack of contact between indoor and outdoor surfaces dramatically reduces heat conduction.
Upgrading from traditional single-pane to double-pane replacement windows can significantly reduce your energy bills. The space between glass panels can be optionally filled with inert gases like argon to enhance insulation. Double-pane glazing has proven to be so effective that Renewal by Andersen replacement windows are equipped with double-pane High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass packages.
While upgrading from single to double-panel windows results in significant energy savings, the same isn’t true when upgrading from double to triple-pane glass. Adding a third pane only improves insulation by a small percentage—certainly not worth the 25% to 30% additional cost for the third pane. This is the reason why Renewal by Andersen doesn’t offer triple-pane glass. Rather, we improved on the other components that positively affect energy efficiency: our exclusive Fibrex® material frames, our unmatched craftsmanship and our precise installation methods.
